(09/11) The very first time that the existence of Dead Whorse Riddles was confirmed was when an advert for forthcoming Malaise Music releases appeared in Subnormal Magazine in 1993. Although no name was given, it was assigned a catalogue number of MAL CD 02. The first Malaise Music catalogue was also printed in 1993, and showed the front cover artwork, designed especially by Erik Christides, with the catalogue number underneath. The actual title, Dead Horse Riddles, was eventually confirmed on the Malaise Music catalogue of 1994. The company did not produce any copies of the recording, and therefore none were sold. It was not mentioned again until being advertised in the Malaise Media catalogue of 1997, where it was titled Dead Whorse Riddles, and described as being a 'compilation of rare & unreleased tracks', and given a catalogue number of 4. This time it was to be released as a limited edition cassette, rather than as a limited edition CD, and was to be sold exclusively through RozzNet.com. Like Malaise Music, however, Malaise Media did not produce any copies of the recording. It's status was recognised when it was shown in the Premature_Ejaculation discography of 'The Art of Rozz Williams' book, published by Last Gasp. We have chosen to retain the later spelling of the title, as not only is this how it is written in 'The Art of Rozz Williams' book, but we feel is also more in fitting with Rozz's work. It is a recording of incredible richness and depth, and along with A Little Hard to Swallow, Body of a Crow and '6' , completes a quartet of quintessential releases in 'The Lost Recordings' series. The tracks contained on Dead Whorse Riddles would appear to date from the mid '80s, and this is the reason it is being released at this stage, rather than later on in the series.

Dead Whorse Riddles consists of 16 separate tracks spread over two sides. There are 9 tracks on side A and 7 tracks on side B. Some of the tracks are instrumental pieces, while others contain the use of samples. A total of 8 tracks were on the Anesthesia CD, which was released by Dark Vinyl Records in 1992. The track, Red, is actually featured on Body of a Crow, where it was entitled fall (the wayside). Taking Good Care of Your Fear is yet another slightly modified version of a piece of music originally heard on Disc A of A Little Hard to Swallow. It was also the first track on '6' , and the track entitled 'Un..'. on Rise - both in reworked forms. In addition to this, Atrophy can be found on the Necessary Discomforts CD, released by Cleopatra in 1993. A further 3 tracks appear to be excerpts from, or at least variants of, Descent, which has previously been released in 'The Lost Recordings' series. However, 4 tracks are unique to this release.

The original cassette for Dead Whorse Riddes does not appear to have survived. If anyone has any information about what happened to the original cassette then we would be very interested to know. The recording we have used is a first generation copy made by Andreas Hofmann directly from Rozz's original cassette.

The artwork we have used is a direct copy made by Andreas Hofmann from Rozz's original cassette sleeve. The sleeve features an anatomical study of a human torso on a green background, with the main bones and muscles noted. This would perhaps suggest that this example was borrowed from a medical journal. The copy of the cassette artwork was in quite good condition. We removed any blemishes and creases from the artwork to make it look cleaner, and intensified the green background so that the image stands out perfectly. The next task was to decide on the design for the back cover. We chose to invert the figure into a negative image, and turned it green We again chose to incorporate a barcode to the back cover in keeping with many previous Premature_Ejaculation releases. Since the barcodes used by Rozz were purely decorative and served no other purpose, it was our intention to use a replica of the one on the 1989 issue of the Death Cultures cassette.
